Travel itinerary

Our tropical adventure will begin at the Juan Santamaria International Airport in the capital of Costa Rica, San José, where we will meet our guide. Then we will head to the hotel for lunch, followed by a stroll through the center of the Costa Rican capital. We will explore the remarkable places of San Jose, where modernity blends with history, with museums, major government buildings, theaters, churches, parks, schools, universities, and the former president’s house, Nobel laureate Oscar Arias, all next to shopping galleries. We will also visit the most famous and iconic place in the Central Valley – the Pre-Columbian Gold Museum and the National Theater. Accommodation and overnight stay.

San José, Costa Rica

After breakfast, we will head towards the Central Mountain Range, where we will visit an original Costa Rican coffee plantation, the La Paz Waterfall Gardens, and the Poas Volcano. The main purpose of this “coffee tour” is to learn about the coffee production process and the brewing process itself. We will learn about production, harvesting, processing, and roasting of the beans. Then, we will embark on an expedition to the Poas Volcano. As we approach the crater, we will feel the change in temperature and vegetation. Along the way, we will contemplate the beautiful landscape of coffee plantations, ferns, flowers, and strawberries. In the beautiful national park, we can admire not only the impressive main crater and the sulfuric fumaroles forming but also explore various ecosystems. Our journey will continue to the La Paz Waterfall Gardens, where we will have lunch. Upon arrival, we will hike to the spectacular waterfall in the middle of the rainforest. We will also visit a hummingbird gallery, a serpentarium, a birdhouse, a butterfly garden, and a frog exhibit. Then, we will drive further north to the lowlands, where the Arenal Volcano is located, near the town of La Fortuna. Accommodation and overnight stay.

La Paz Waterfall Gardens, Central Valley, Costa Rica

After breakfast, we will head to the northern lowlands near the town of La Fortuna, where the majestic Arenal Volcano is located. Our first stop will be at the Arenal Mistico Park, renowned for its exceptional hiking trails and hanging bridges. These bridges provide unparalleled views of the surrounding rainforest, allowing us to get up close to birds, flowers, and lush vegetation. It’s a perfect excursion for nature enthusiasts visiting Costa Rica!

During our approximately 2.5-hour walk, we will have the opportunity to admire the incredible diversity of fauna and flora typical of the tropical rainforest. We’ll encounter various bird species and plants as we traverse fifteen sections of bridges, including six hanging bridges offering stunning views of the Arenal Volcano. The trails are easy, safe, and beautiful, providing panoramic vistas of the volcano.

In the afternoon, we will visit the Arenal Volcano National Park, one of the most visited destinations in all of Central America. The area we will explore was devastated by a lava flow in 1968, resulting in sparse vegetation in some areas. During our walk, we will marvel at views of the impressive Arenal Volcano, the pristine Lake Arenal, and the dormant Cerro Chato volcano. We will also see solidified lava. Finally, we will retire to our accommodations for the night

Arenal Volcano

After breakfast, we will head towards Lake Nicaragua. Situated in a tectonic rift, this lake boasts a total of 365 islands, most likely formed as a result of the eruption of the Mombacho volcano. Next, we will proceed to the port, where we will board a boat for a cruise around some of the famous islands of Granada. During the journey, you will have the opportunity to admire the fauna and flora of Lake Nicaragua. Accommodation and overnight stay will be arranged.

Granada, Nicaragua

On this day, we will explore Granada, the oldest colonial city in continental America, located on the shores of the largest lake in Central America, Lake Nicaragua (Lago de Nicaragua). Since its founding in 1524, the city has endured numerous pirate attacks, civil wars, and fires. Our tour of Granada will commence with a visit to the main square, followed by La Casa de los Leones, a cultural center, the oldest church-turned-museum and convent of Saint Francis, the Ceramic Museum, and La Merced Church, whose observation tower offers stunning views of the city. We will also stroll along the touristy La Calzada street, lined with cozy cafes, restaurants, and shops.

Next, we will visit the capital city, Managua. While exploring its museums, parks, and other landmarks, we will learn about its culture and history. Our next stop will be the first and largest national park in Nicaragua, Masaya Volcano National Park, where we can see the crater of the still-active Masaya Volcano. We will also visit the famous craft markets in Masaya. Overnight stay will be arranged.

Managua – Nicaragua

After breakfast, we will continue our journey towards the Pacific Coast of Costa Rica, famous for its beautiful beaches and exotic forests and tropical parks. Overnight stay will be arranged.

The Pacific Ocean Beach

Free day to enjoy the charms of the Caribbean Coast. Overnight stay.

Tamarindo, Costa Rica

On this day, our adventure on the Pacific Coast comes to an end. After breakfast at the hotel, we will head to Juan Santamaria International Airport in San Jose for our return flight to Chicago.
