Flight to Reykjavik
Flight to Ilulissat
Today, we embark on a flight to the town of Ilulissat in Greenland, positioned on the west coast of the island, approximately 250 kilometers above the Arctic Circle.
En route, we will be treated to breathtaking aerial views of the world’s largest island, home to a population of approximately 56,000 inhabitants.
Ilullisat
Upon arrival in Greenland, a seamless transfer to the hotel will mark the beginning of our exploration of the town of Ilulissat. We will delve into its cultural and historical attractions, gaining insights into the daily lives of the island’s residents.
For lunch, we will savor a delightful meal at one of the local restaurants. In the afternoon, an enchanting cruise awaits us through Disco Bay, leading to the renowned Ilulissat Icefjord, a UNESCO World Heritage site.
En route, we will navigate past colossal, drifting icebergs, a captivating result of the highly active Sermeq Kujalleq glacier. Our journey will conclude with a return to the town for an overnight stay.
Sermermiut
Following breakfast, our day commences with a brief hike across the Greenlandic tundra to Sermermiut, recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site. Spectacular views of icebergs in the Ilulissat Icefjord will captivate our senses.
Furthermore, we will delve into the remnants of ancient Inuit settlements that flourished in this area for over 4,000 years.
Upon our return to the town, there will be ample time for further exploration of the surroundings. For those with an inclination for additional activities, optional pursuits such as kayaking in the bay or enjoying a scenic flight over the fjord are available (additional fees apply).
Eqi Glacier
Today unfolds another remarkable attraction – a boat excursion to the Eqi Glacier, one of the largest in Greenland. Even at a distance, the resounding echoes of massive ice chunks breaking off and plunging into the water become audible.
Given the glacier’s dynamic activity, a safe distance will be maintained during observation, accompanied by insightful narratives about the region’s history. If fortune smiles upon us, there’s also the chance to encounter whales.
After approximately 6 hours, we will return to the town for some well-deserved rest. For the more adventurous, there is an option to indulge in the Arctic sauna experience (additional fee).
Oqaatsut
Our final day on the island is dedicated to a day trip to the exceptionally charming and tranquil settlement of Oqaatsut, nestled just 20 kilometers north of Ilulissat.
During the 30-minute boat journey, we will once again relish the opportunity to marvel at colossal icebergs from the Ilulissat Icefjord.
Upon arrival, a leisurely stroll through the settlement awaits, encompassing visits to the school, church, and Oqaatsut’s fish factory.
This immersive experience offers insights into the culture and way of life of the local residents.
A highlight of the day includes a delectable meal crafted with local ingredients at the renowned H8 Explorer restaurant.
Following the meal, ample time will be provided for relaxation amidst incredible vistas, sipping coffee at one of the local cafes, or taking a leisurely stroll around the area.
We will then return to Ilulissat for an overnight stay.
