Mera Peak (6476 m above sea level) is considered the highest trekking peak in Nepal that can be climbed without oxygen support, requiring basic mountaineering skills and good physical fitness. The expedition to Mera Peak in Nepal is an excellent opportunity to start your adventure in the high mountains and to conquer a peak above 6000 m above sea level. During the expedition, you can see 5 of the 6 highest mountain peaks in the world, namely Mt. Everest (8848 m), Makalu (8485 m), Lhotse (8516 m), Cho Oyu (8188 m), and Kanchenjunga (8586 m), along with several other peaks located in the Himalayan region of Nepal, Tibet, and India. The panoramic views of these mountain peaks in Nepal are truly remarkable and can only be experienced from the summit of Mera Peak. Join us on this adventure!
Travel itinerary
Departure to Nepa
Departure to Nepal from any airport worldwide. Meeting with the group departing from Chicago at O’Hare Airport. Check-in and flight to Kathmandu.
Kathmandu
Arrival in Kathmandu, the capital of Nepal. At the airport, we will be greeted by our local guide. Transfer to the hotel located in the heart of Kathmandu, in the Thamel district – the most touristy and commercial part of the city. Here, you can buy mountain gear, clothing, jewelry, maps, paintings, souvenirs, and observe the bustling streets full of life and chaos. In the afternoon, there will be a pre-expedition meeting for our Himalayan adventure.

Kathmandu - Lukla - Paiya
This morning, we will wake up very early to reach Manthali Airport, which is about a 4-hour drive from Kathmandu. From Manthali, we will board a flight to Lukla. The total flight time will be around 25-30 minutes and is sure to be one of the most exciting flying experiences.
Upon arrival in Lukla, we will meet our Sherpa team, who will accompany us on the expedition, and begin our trek south along the breathtaking Dudh Koshi river towards Paiya (2730 m). Dinner and overnight stay in a guesthouse.

Trekking duration: approximately 3 hours
- Due to heavy air traffic at Kathmandu International Airport, direct flights to Lukla may be impossible, hence the planned departure from Manthali Airport in Ramechhap.
Payia - Panggom
After breakfast, we continue our trek towards the Khari La Pass (3080 m). Soon, we will be rewarded with spectacular views of Cho Oyu and the Kharikhola Valley, as well as enjoy lunch in an extraordinary location. The trail leads us through charming farms, terraced fields, lush green forests, and cascading waterfalls. Eventually, we will reach the picturesque village of Panggom (2946 m), admiring incredible views of the Dudh Koshi Valley along the way. We will stay overnight in Panggom, where we’ll have the opportunity to experience the traditional Sherpa way of life.

Panggom - Ramilo Danda
After a hearty breakfast, we bid farewell to Panggoma and set off on our journey through Ningsow to Ramailo Danda. The trail takes us through a lush forest adorned with rhododendrons and bamboo, culminating in Pankongma La (3174 m), another magnificent mountain pass. This place marks the divide between the Dudh Koshi and Hingku river valleys. Along the way, get ready for breathtaking views of Kongde, Manju Peak, and Numbur Himal. Then, our route leads us gently to the village of Ningsow, where we’ll stop for a satisfying lunch. After the meal, we traverse undulating terrain until we finally reach the charming Ramailo Danda.

Ramilo Danda - Chhatra Khola
Chhatra Khola - Kothe
We set off to the north, following the trail of the Majhang Khola, where “khola” means river in the Nepali language. After crossing this waterway, we continue along a path parallel to the Hinku Khola. Moving through terrain that alternates between ascending and descending, we reach a bridge that takes us to the opposite bank of the river. A bit further along, we find our overnight accommodation in Kothe.

Kothe - Thaknak
Thaknak - Khare
Leaving Thaknak behind, we embark on a short trek to Khare, where the most crucial part of our adventure begins. We ascend near the Dig Glacier, passing by Charpati Tal, a glacial lake, before descending along the glacier. Then, we ascend again, heading towards Dig Kharka, where we admire inspiring views of the Kyeshar Glacier, Charpati Himal, and Mera Peak. The steep ascent through the Hinku Nup and Shar glaciers eventually leads us to Khare.

Training for acclimatization and pre-climbing
Today is dedicated to rest and basic training. We will familiarize ourselves with all the mountain equipment needed for climbing. Guides and Sherpas will provide us with important information and teach us some skills necessary for summiting. After an early dinner, we’ll rest and spend the night.
Khare - Mera High Camp
After breakfast, we will begin our trek along the glacier and approach the pass, heading towards the high camp. The breathtaking view of the panorama of mighty mountains rising above 7000 meters can be admired up close before us. Some of the noteworthy peaks include Chamlang, Makalu, Baruntse, Everest, Lhotse, Nuptse, Ama Dablam, Cho Oyu, and Kantega.

Duration: Approximately 7 hours
Mera High Camp - Mera Peak - Khare
Khare - Kothe
We continue descending towards Tangnang, leaving the mountains behind us. Then, we reach Kothe, where we spend the night.
Altitude: 3,600m / 11,808ft (Kothe)
Duration: Approximately 5 hours
Kothe - Thuli Kharka
On this day, we head back towards Zatrabok. Along the trail, we enjoy magnificent views of alpine vegetation, pine, and rhododendron forest.

Duration: Approximately 6 hours
Thuli Kharka - Lukla
We head towards Chutenga, and our trail ascends until we reach the Zatrwa La Pass. From there, our trail descends until we reach the village of Chutenga. We arrive at Lukla, marking the end of our journey. This also concludes our expedition in the Everest region.
Lukla - Manthali - Kathmandu
Today we bid farewell to the Himalayas as our Mera Peak expedition comes to an end. The flight from Lukla to Manthali takes place in the morning hours, so after breakfast, we will head to the airport. After about 25 minutes of flight, we will arrive in Manthali. From there, private transportation will take us back to Kathmandu.
Kathmandu
Today is a rest day, a time for some last-minute shopping, and leisurely walks through the streets of Thamel. For those interested, there’s an optional paid tour of Kathmandu with a local guide (subject to confirmation at the office).
This day also serves as a buffer day in case our flight from Lukla is delayed due to weather conditions or unforeseen circumstances, or if we need an extra day on the trail.
Wylot
It’s time to say goodbye as our adventure in Nepal comes to an end. Depending on the departure time, we’ll arrange a private transfer to the airport in Kathmandu. Then, it’s time for our return flight.
