After breakfast, we continue our trek towards the Khari La Pass (3080 m). Soon, we will be rewarded with spectacular views of Cho Oyu and the Kharikhola Valley, as well as enjoy lunch in an extraordinary location. The trail leads us through charming farms, terraced fields, lush green forests, and cascading waterfalls. Eventually, we will reach the picturesque village of Panggom (2946 m), admiring incredible views of the Dudh Koshi Valley along the way. We will stay overnight in Panggom, where we’ll have the opportunity to experience the traditional Sherpa way of life.

Panggom - Ramilo Danda

After a hearty breakfast, we bid farewell to Panggoma and set off on our journey through Ningsow to Ramailo Danda. The trail takes us through a lush forest adorned with rhododendrons and bamboo, culminating in Pankongma La (3174 m), another magnificent mountain pass. This place marks the divide between the Dudh Koshi and Hingku river valleys. Along the way, get ready for breathtaking views of Kongde, Manju Peak, and Numbur Himal. Then, our route leads us gently to the village of Ningsow, where we’ll stop for a satisfying lunch. After the meal, we traverse undulating terrain until we finally reach the charming Ramailo Danda.

Trekking duration: approximately 6 hours

Ramilo Danda - Chhatra Khola

Today’s journey takes us through dense jungle within the Makalu Barun National Park. Since there are no tea houses along the way, we provide dry rations for lunch. This national park extends all the way to the international border with Tibet. If luck is on our side, we may encounter some of the park’s extraordinary inhabitants, including the elusive red panda, the majestic snow leopard, the Himalayan tahr, the graceful musk deer, as well as various bird species such as the ultramarine flycatcher. We’ll spend the night in Chhatra Khola.

Trekking duration: approximately 7 hours

Chhatra Khola - Kothe

We set off to the north, following the trail of the Majhang Khola, where “khola” means river in the Nepali language. After crossing this waterway, we continue along a path parallel to the Hinku Khola. Moving through terrain that alternates between ascending and descending, we reach a bridge that takes us to the opposite bank of the river. A bit further along, we find our overnight accommodation in Kothe.

Trekking duration: approximately 6 hours

Kothe - Thaknak

Today’s journey begins with breathtaking views of Mera Peak, Kusum Kanguru, Charpati Himal, and Thamserku. Setting out from Kothe, we head towards the Upper Hinku Valley. Here, the vegetation thins out, and the forest gradually recedes, giving way to expansive kharkas, pasturelands for yaks. This part of the valley is devoid of larger villages. After a long trek, we reach Gondishung, where we stop for tea and snacks. We will also visit the ancient Lungsumgba Gompa, a Buddhist sanctuary nestled in a massive rock. Another hour of walking leads us to Thaknak.

Elevation: 4,358m/14,297ft (Thaknak)

Trekking duration: approximately 4 hours

Thaknak - Khare

Leaving Thaknak behind, we embark on a short trek to Khare, where the most crucial part of our adventure begins. We ascend near the Dig Glacier, passing by Charpati Tal, a glacial lake, before descending along the glacier. Then, we ascend again, heading towards Dig Kharka, where we admire inspiring views of the Kyeshar Glacier, Charpati Himal, and Mera Peak. The steep ascent through the Hinku Nup and Shar glaciers eventually leads us to Khare.

Elevation: 4,045m/16,486ft (Khare)

Trekking duration: approximately 3 hours

Training for acclimatization and pre-climbing

Today is dedicated to rest and basic training. We will familiarize ourselves with all the mountain equipment needed for climbing. Guides and Sherpas will provide us with important information and teach us some skills necessary for summiting. After an early dinner, we’ll rest and spend the night.

Khare - Mera High Camp

After breakfast, we will begin our trek along the glacier and approach the pass, heading towards the high camp. The breathtaking view of the panorama of mighty mountains rising above 7000 meters can be admired up close before us. Some of the noteworthy peaks include Chamlang, Makalu, Baruntse, Everest, Lhotse, Nuptse, Ama Dablam, Cho Oyu, and Kantega.

Altitude: 5,780 m/ 18,958 ft (Mera High Camp)

Duration: Approximately 7 hours

Mera High Camp - Mera Peak - Khare

Finally, the big day has arrived! We wake up around 1 in the morning to prepare ourselves. After having something to eat, we start the ascent to the summit. It takes about 4-6 hours to reach the top. From the summit, there is an incredible view of the picturesque landscapes and beautiful mountain peaks. After spending some time at the top, we descend to the high camp. We take a short rest, have a hot meal, and then head back towards Khare for the night.

Altitude: 6,476 m/ 21,190 ft (Mera Peak summit); 5,045 m/ 16,547 ft (Khare)

Duration: Approximately 9 hours

Khare - Kothe

We continue descending towards Tangnang, leaving the mountains behind us. Then, we reach Kothe, where we spend the night.

Altitude: 3,600m / 11,808ft (Kothe)

Duration: Approximately 5 hours

Kothe - Thuli Kharka

On this day, we head back towards Zatrabok. Along the trail, we enjoy magnificent views of alpine vegetation, pine, and rhododendron forest.

Altitude: 4,300m m/ 14,107ft (Thuli Kharka)

Duration: Approximately 6 hours

Thuli Kharka - Lukla

We head towards Chutenga, and our trail ascends until we reach the Zatrwa La Pass. From there, our trail descends until we reach the village of Chutenga. We arrive at Lukla, marking the end of our journey. This also concludes our expedition in the Everest region.

Lukla - Manthali - Kathmandu

Today we bid farewell to the Himalayas as our Mera Peak expedition comes to an end. The flight from Lukla to Manthali takes place in the morning hours, so after breakfast, we will head to the airport. After about 25 minutes of flight, we will arrive in Manthali. From there, private transportation will take us back to Kathmandu.

Today is a rest day, a time for some last-minute shopping, and leisurely walks through the streets of Thamel. For those interested, there’s an optional paid tour of Kathmandu with a local guide (subject to confirmation at the office).

This day also serves as a buffer day in case our flight from Lukla is delayed due to weather conditions or unforeseen circumstances, or if we need an extra day on the trail.

It’s time to say goodbye as our adventure in Nepal comes to an end. Depending on the departure time, we’ll arrange a private transfer to the airport in Kathmandu. Then, it’s time for our return flight.
